He found dozens of blue barrels of items that is most often tossed in land-fills. Items lucky enough to end up at T4T wharehouse on South Western Ave in Gardena are made available to teachers and educators. Shiva and his staff hold workshops and classes for young scientists and artists sponsored by NASA, INTEL, NBC Ch. 4 and Teaching organizations. A $100 donation allows you to take up to 100lb pounds of materials.

On this visit Ray took 15lbs of samples back to his studio.

Ray learned about dangling sculpture through Alexander Calder. He gained much insight into their behavior while recovering from cancer. A mobile hung in his hospital room. He was able to influence it’s movement by aiming the respirator outlet. He has built quite a few since his recovery, using materials such as CD blanks.
His most recent inspiration has came after a visit to Trash for Teachers. T4T’s web site describes their mission as “working to inspire educators, students, communities and businesses to rethink what others overlook. We are passionate about hands-on learning and we believe that curiosity and experimentation are the core of critical thinking & ingenuity”. Shiva Mandell  Director of Creative Programming, took Ray on a tour of the T4T facilities. Durring the tour Shiva and Ray came upon  a carton of optical lenses.

The sculpture features the signatures of more than 100 musicians on the keys many collected at the Jazz Bakery by Gregory Dahl and a mural depicting the life of Thelonious Sphere Monk by Sam Pace. The harp has been replaced by a jazz collage created by Ray Mc Cray.

Play Me, I’m Yours is an artwork by artist Luke Jerram.

Ray’s piano was played by Leslie A. Thomas.

Ray’s work was instaled at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center on Washington near La Brea Ave.

Ray, Ceaz Hernandez and Greg Dahl pulled out all Ray’s paintings. Felicia looked at all of Ray’s work and outlined how artists can get commissions and grants from the City of Los Angeles.

Ray is now in the pipeline to get “Requests for Qualifications for public art opportunities”,  stepping stone to making public art.
